Free Tax Filing Options: VITA, TCE, and IRS Free File

Summary: Free ways to file a return with the EITC include VITA (free in-person preparation for people who generally make $69,000 or less), TCE and AARP Tax-Aide (free help prioritizing filers 60 and older), IRS Free File guided software (free for AGI of $89,000 or less), Free File Fillable Forms (any income), and MilTax for military families. Bring ID, Social Security cards, all income documents, and bank details. EITC refunds are held until mid-February by law.

You should never have to pay to claim a credit designed for working families. Several free programs will prepare and file your return, including the EITC, at no cost. Here is how each one works and who it serves.

VITA: free in-person help for lower income filers

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax preparation by IRS-trained volunteers at thousands of sites nationwide, in libraries, schools, malls, and community centers. It serves people who generally make $69,000 or less, people with disabilities, people with limited English, and many active duty military members and veterans. VITA volunteers handle W-2 wages, Social Security income, unemployment, and credits including the EITC and Child Tax Credit. Complex returns, such as rental properties with depreciation or complicated business losses, are generally out of scope. Find a site with the IRS VITA locator or call 800-906-9887.

TCE and AARP Tax-Aide: free help for seniors

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) gives priority to people 60 and older, with no income ceiling, and specializes in pension, Social Security, and retirement income questions. Most TCE sites are run through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. Use the AARP site locator or call 888-227-7669.

IRS Free File: free guided software

IRS Free File is a public-private partnership offering brand-name guided tax software at no cost. For the 2026 filing season (tax year 2025 returns), guided software is available to filers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, through eight partner companies. Always start at the official IRS Free File page so you land in the free flow rather than a paid product, and check each provider's fine print, since some have age or state limits. If your income is above the cutoff, Free File Fillable Forms let anyone e-file a federal return for free, with no guidance and no state filing.

Direct File is gone

The IRS's own Direct File pilot, which ran the prior two seasons, was cancelled and is not available for the 2026 filing season. IRS Free File remains the free guided option.

MilTax for military families

Active duty service members and many veterans can use MilTax, free tax software and support through Military OneSource, with no income limit and covering federal plus state returns.

What to bring

Whichever option you choose, bring a photo ID, Social Security cards for everyone on the return, all W-2s and 1099s, records of any other income, bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit, and a copy of last year's return if you have it. Missing documents are the top reason free appointments run long.

When your EITC refund arrives

Under the PATH Act, the IRS cannot release any refund containing the EITC (or the Additional Child Tax Credit) before mid-February, no matter how early you file. Early e-filers with direct deposit typically see EITC refunds in late February to early March. Filing early still beats filing late; the hold just sets the earliest possible date.

Frequently asked questions

Is VITA really free?

Yes. VITA tax preparation is completely free, performed by IRS-trained volunteers. There is no charge for the return or the e-filing.

Can VITA handle self-employment income?

Only simple situations. VITA sites generally cannot prepare Schedule C returns with a net loss, depreciation, or business use of the home, nor complex investment or rental returns. If your return is complex, use a licensed professional.

I missed the April deadline. Can I still get free help?

You can request a filing extension, and IRS Free File options remain available. VITA and Tax-Aide sites mostly operate during filing season and wind down afterward, so check the locator for year-round sites near you.

Will free tax software handle the EITC correctly?

Yes. The EITC is a standard credit in all guided Free File software, which walks you through the eligibility questions and the Schedule EIC. Double check the qualifying child information you enter, since that is where most errors start.
